In an increasingly digital world, access to online content has become essential for everyone. However, people with disabilities often face barriers that limit access to important information and services. These barriers include many obstacles, from poorly legible text and inappropriate contrasts to inaccessible navigation elements and content.

‘For us, people are at the centre of every project. Especially when it comes to recruiting. Accessibility was therefore a key requirement for the implementation of the Bavarian police careers website from minute one and one of our top priorities right up to the end.’

The Barrier-Free Accessibility Reinforcement Act (BFSG) obliges companies and public institutions to make digital content accessible to people with disabilities. The law applies to a wide range of applications, including websites, mobile apps and digital services, and requires compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2.

Our defined goals

WCAG 2.2 is based on four fundamental principles These principles are summarised in 13 guidelines and 86 success criteria, which are categorised into compliance levels A, AA and AAA. In order to fulfil the legal requirements of the BFSG, at least conformity level AA must be achieved.

Solution

Successful implementation of accessible websites requires a completely standardised approach that takes equal account of technical, design and content aspects. One example from the IDEENHAUS for a holistic implementation is the careers website of the police, which ensures full accessibility through targeted measures.

The website has been designed to work optimally on different devices and screen sizes. This ensures that the content is accessible and operable regardless of the device used.

To ensure that the content is understandable for everyone, the website is also available in plain language. This makes it easier for people with cognitive impairments in particular to access information and use the website.

We offer users the option of adjusting the contrasts between background and text. This ensures that content is also easy to read for people with visual impairments or colour blindness.

The website also allows users to change the font sizes to suit their needs in order to improve readability.

We have implemented a screen reader that gives users the option of having the page content read aloud to them. This provides important support for people with visual impairments or learning difficulties in particular.

For hearing-impaired users, we have integrated videos with sign language to improve access to multimedia content.

Impact

With the barrier-free implementation of the website for the Bavarian police, we not only met the requirements and implemented them successfully. We have also developed a user experience that is ultimately simpler and more intuitive for all users. As a result, we logically increase conversion rates for applications and can ultimately achieve our goal: To inspire enough people to do a service for society with the Bavarian Police!
